Santa Monica Bay — View from Venice Beach

For 40 years, I lived and worked in a cozy studio in Venice Beach. On hundreds of evenings, I strolled a block west to catch a panoramic view of the sunset from this spot along the Ocean Front Walk at a favorite haunt just north of Venice Pier.

I first painted this scene looking north across Santa Monica Bay in the 1980s. I painted this latest rendition in the summer of 2025. This is my most recent painting of this wonderful perspective. 

I've lived most of my life a few blocks or a few miles from the Pacific Ocean.  During my four decades in Venice, I lived close enough to the largest body of water on Planet Earth to smell the salty air, to hear foghorns groaning and waves crashing.

These are among the sights and sounds I will miss the most. As one wise and wonderful student and lover of oceans once wrote: "The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever." – Jacques Cousteau
