This colorful Venice nightscape was inspired by hundreds of sunset strolls along the historic Venice Canals. I painted the original in the 1980s, when the old Craftsman cottages, vacant lots, and wonderfully eccentric character of Venice were beginning to give way to a changing neighborhood.

I half-jokingly called these early paintings my Retro Canal series.

Decades later, I received an unexpected phone call from a woman named Destiny at ABC/Disney Studios. A Disney art director had discovered my paintings online and wanted to feature two of them on the sets of the hit television series black-ish.

What a thrill! As a kid, I'd been inspired to paint by Disney's The Wonderful World of Color. Now, all those years later, my own artwork was finding its way onto television.

When black-ish completed its eight-season run, the studio returned my two framed prints. They've been hanging in my studio ever since.

Now it's time for these little pieces of Venice—and Hollywood history—to find new homes.
